
PIT-UN Funding & Grants
Members of the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) are eligible for funding through our seasonal Thematic and topic-focused Requests for Proposals. The Public Interest Technology University Network Requests for Proposals is a unique process that drives equitable innovation in technology across academia, government, industry, and civil society.
PIT-UN members leveraged these funds to create innovative PIT projects, from new courses to community partnerships, career placement, research collaboratives, and more.

Past Awards

2024-2025 Tech for Change
TFC Hackathons are civic-focused, community-driven, and deployed by students to address local injustices in health care, elections, education, and other public interest areas. Winning proposals include the participation of students from across technical and nontechnical disciplines.

2024-2025 PIT Career Fair
PIT-UN periodically seeks proposals from PIT-UN member institutions’ Career Placement or Career Counseling Service staff whose work touches students’ interest in public interest technology to provide multi-institution or regional career fair(s) to connect students and employers who are interested in the work of improving people’s lives through technology.

2024 PIT-UN Network Challenge Grantees
In its sixth year, the Network Challenge awarded just over $1.3 million to 13 projects led by PIT-UN members. The 2024 projects center on communities’ needs in technology design, workforce, and policy to empower communities through partnerships with minority-serving institutions, local and state governments, and nonprofits.
2023 PIT-UN Network Challenge Grantees
New America awarded a total of $2.3 million to 18 grantees representing universities and colleges in the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN) to bolster their efforts to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion in technology development. Grants will be used to fund interdisciplinary teaching; career pipeline development; experiential learning; and network building to advance social and racial justice, climate action, cybersecurity, data equity, human rights, and more.
